The strawberry is the most popular berry fruit in the world, according to www.whfoods.org. It’s succulent taste and beautiful crimson color, make a delightful aesthetic addition to salads, and desserts. It is naturally high in Vitamin C. A high dose of vitamin C in our diets is said to help lower our chances of developing arthritis and fighting other ailments. They also have been proven to decrease cancer related deaths due to the ellagitannin content they hold. Ellagitannin protects the cells in our bodies from damage causing radicals like tobacco smoke and food additives. Both of which are known to cause cancer. Radicals are fought by anti-oxidants in our body, thus the need for vitamin C in our diets.

If thinking about adding more Vitamin C to your diet, the healthy and natural qualities of strawberries are just the way to do that. They preserve well in fruit salads and make for a delicious dessert for the entire family.

A recipe that has low fat content and nutritious strawberries is strawberry shortcake. It is one of the simplest low fat desserts to make. Some people use biscuits, Twinkies, or regular shortcake but angel food cake’s light texture and sweet taste is the best choice in this recipe. Without the sugar mixture, it is a great choice for dessert for diabetics also.

Ingredients:

1 container strawberries, rinsed and sliced

1 angel food cake (purchased in rectangular shape is best)

1 low fat container of vanilla ice cream

1 container low fat cool whip

In my family, we don’t create a sugar mixture but if you would like to it’s better to make mixture the night before to allow strawberries and sugar to mix properly.

If you would like sugar mixture:

Put sliced strawberries in small bowl, add 1/2 cup of sugar and 1/4 cup of water. To help with tartness, 1 teaspoon of lemon juice can be added. Mix together, cover, and place in refrigerator. The next morning mix together again and the mixture is ready to put on angel food cake!

For final preparation, cut 1/2 inch of angel food cake and place on saucer. Put a scoop of low fat vanilla ice cream on top. Add 1/2 cup of strawberries, or strawberry sugar mixture, on top of ice cream. Put a dollop of low fat whipping cream and this tasty dessert is ready to serve! This recipe serves 4 but can easily be doubled, or tripled.

Keep your body healthy with natural vitamins in strawberries. You won’t be sorry you did.

For children who love basketball, having a basketball themed birthday party is hard to resist. This is a party that can easily be done outside, weather permitting, which will save your home from a bit of wear and tear. You can also throw a basketball themed party in a recreation room. These ideas will help you throw a basketball themed party for your little girl or boy.

If you are handing out invitations, just cut neat circles from orange construction paper, and use a marker to draw the lines to make it resemble a basketball. (How to draw a basketball) Write the time, date, place and RSVP information on the back of our home made card. If you need an invitation that will fit in an envelope, print basketball birthday cards from the internet.

To decorate for your child’s basketball birthday party, visit sportswear and sporting goods stores to purchase basketball memorabilia, posters, jerseys, hats, banners, and trophies. Fill orange helium balloons and draw lines on them to resemble basketballs. Tablecloths should look like a basketball court. (You can draw this on an inexpensive white sheet or cloth. Have guests sign the tablecloth for a keepsake. Do not forget to put up a size appropriate basketball hoop. When the party is over, most of these goodies can be used to decorate your child’s room.

Serve foods hot from the grill such as hot dogs and hamburgers. Potato chips, popcorn, and cheese nachos can be served in paper cups. For drinks, have miniature soft drinks and bottles of water. You can shape your cake like a basketball by baking it in a round metal, well greased, bowl. When you flip the cake over it will look like a half-sphere. Ice the cake with frosting colored with red and yellow food coloring to make orange. Pipe black frosting, to create the basketball lines. This is just one of many ideas for creative basketball birthday cakes.

As children arrive, have them write their names onto sweatbands with markers. These can be used in place of party hats, plus it will help parents and supervisors to learn the name of each child. Assign them a number and write that number on the back. You can use these numbers later to pull names from a bowl to award prizes.

You would of course play basketball games at a basketball birthday party. You can line up the children and give each of them one minute to get as many baskets as possible. Children can also do this blindfolded.

Party favors would include basketball themed stickers, games, rings, wristbands, medals and stickers. You find some of these at your local dollar store. Others can be found at the online party supply store, oriental trading. All of these items, plus candies can be placed in a piñata, which are a hit for kids parties. You can adapt a simple piñata tutorial made from a balloon to create your basketball piñata. To break it, the kids can throw basketballs at it, or swing a bat at it which is kind of funny as bats and basketballs don’t normally go together

As much as my family loves going to Nags Head a few times a year, we often take our own food because so many of the restaurants there just aren’t very good. Case in point: Jimmy’s Seafood Buffet.

While Jimmy’s offers a 100-plus item food buffet, the food is often hot when it should be cold and cold when it should be hot. The most popular items, such as steak and crab legs, are not replaced regularly. We spent over an hour there and never saw a crab leg or steak on the bar.

I will admit that the atmosphere of the restaurant is kind of cool. It resembles an old fashioned fishing shack both inside and out. It’s full of wonderful fishing memorabilia and fun décor. The atmosphere is laid back and casual.

We had to wait quite a while before some one came to seat us. Even then she barely spoke to us except to point her finger to the buffet and take our drink orders. Even after our meal, we had to chase her down in order to get our ticket.

While it is true that we visited the restaurant just as the season was coming to an end, I still have a problem with a restaurant that advertises one thing and delivers something else altogether. Especially at the expensive cost of $29 per adult, $18 per teenager, and $8 per child.

Jimmy’s claims the following items are served on their buffet:

Homemade Soups:
Crab bisque and
New England clam chowder.

Crab Legs:
Snow, King, and Stone, and
Golden and Blue when in season.

Carrot cake,

Tropical fruit salad, and
Sugar free Jello.

The day we went to Jimmy’s, there was plenty of fish on the buffet but some of it looked like it had been sitting there four hours. The same was true of many of the vegetable choices. We didn’t have access to steak or crab legs. However, the spaghetti was fresh as was the salad.

We tried several dishes like their crab cakes, fried oysters, and several shrimp dishes. Unfortunately, we weren’t all that impressed. I will, however, give a thumbs up to their cherry cheesecake. It was delicious.

I doubt we will return to Jimmy’s anytime soon, particularly since there are so many other restaurants in the area to try out.

Sorry, guys, this one only gets two out of five stars.

How do I love delicatessen foods? Let me count the ways. First on the list must be the ever-popular corned beef. It first came to the U.S. with Irish immigrants in the mid-19th Century as the family dinner staple of corned beef, cabbage and boiled potatoes. Corned beef was also a main food for soldiers in the Civil War, when canning of bully beef became possible.

When the Jewish immigrants came to the U.S. in the latter quarter of the 19th Century, they brought their own version of corned beef (in Canada they still call it smoked meat).

Every deli has a display case full of corned beef, and its most popular sandwich offering is usually corned beef on rye bread with a dab of yellow mustard and a side of kosher pickles.

Corned beef can also be ground up and used to fill hot dog and sausage casings. The term kosher hot dog doesn’t necessarily mean it meets Jewish religious standards, but just that it is made in the kosher style.

The same applies to all kinds of kosher-style pickles, as well as to Jewish or kosher rye bread. It features a very hard, dark outer crust and soft inner bread, often laced with small seeds, called kimmel.

Several Italian versions of preserved pickled beef products are familiar in delis. They’re pastrami and salami, and are much more highly spiced than the original corned beef.

Another familiar preserved beef product served in delis is cow’s tongue, which usually has the highest fat content. It’s also a popular sandwich meat, or served as a hot main course in honey and raison sauce with pickled red cabbage and boiled potatoes. If you prefer fowl products, deli counters have fresh, pickled and smoked versions of turkey, chicken and duck meats.

Of course, magically-medicinal chicken soup is a regular item on the deli menu. It may be served with boiled barley, noodles or plain, with or without pieces of chicken in it. The most popular version of the soup has a big round glob of soft dough floating in the middle called a matsoh ball.

Other soups include borscht, which is prepared in several styles. The hot version is a tomato sauce, beef and cabbage soup. One cold version is made with boiled beets, usually served with a dollop of sour cream. The other cold borsht is made with spinach or other green leaf vegetable and cream.

There are several deli foods that can be served as side or main dishes. Blintzes, which are thin folded pancakes filled with cottage cheese or fruit, are fried or baked, and served hot with sour cream or apple sauce. Latkes are pancakes made with roughly-ground fresh potatoes or a mix, and are served with fruit and syrup, often as

Another side dish or breakfast delicacy is pickled herring. The little fish are preserved in a salt solution, then bottled or canned, similar to the way sardines are prepared. Pickled herring can be preserved plain, or in a cream sauce. They’re served cold on a bed of lettuce, with sliced tomatoes and cucumbers, and because they are extremely salty, sliced rye bread and a drink should be near the plate.

A favorite main meal starter or a breakfast item is chopped chicken liver. The traditional way to make it is to fry and mash the livers with sliced onions and serve on a bed of lettuce with a slice of kosher pickle. To make the chopped liver more of a thick paste, they’re often fried in chicken fat, called schmaltz.

A similar product fried in schmaltz is the stuffed kishka. It is usually a bread, onion and egg mash enclosed in a cow intestinal tube. After it’s fried or baked, in lots of schmaltz, of course, it’s sliced into silver-dollar sized pieces.

Favorite drinks at delis, other than tea and coffee, are Dr. Brown’s sodas. They come in many flavors, including diet, with tangy root beer as the most popular. Of course, if all those deli foods don’t provide enough calories for you at the deli, you must top off the meal with a slice of cheese cake. This dessert delicacy comes plain, or with various fruit toppings.
